Reading Your Referral Funnel
The Referral Funnel view in Analytics → Referrals shows you how your referral links are performing across three stages: clicks, consultations requested, and clients converted.
The Funnel Stages
| Stage | What It Counts | |-------|---------------| | Link Clicks | Unique clicks on your referral links (de-duplicated by device/session) | | Consultations Requested | Consultation form submissions from people who arrived via your link | | Clients Converted | People who accepted a seat or connected their account after arriving via your link |
Conversion rates are displayed between each stage:
- Click → Consultation rate: What percentage of link visitors submitted a consultation request
- Consultation → Client rate: What percentage of consultation requests converted to active clients
- Overall rate: Clients / Clicks — end-to-end funnel efficiency
Interpreting Conversion Rates
There is no universal benchmark for these rates — they vary significantly based on how and where you share your link. Some context:
Click → Consultation rate is most influenced by your profile page content and the context in which you share the link. A link shared with a warm referral from an existing client will convert at a much higher rate than a link in a cold email campaign or a social media post.
Consultation → Client rate reflects how well your discovery process is working. A rate below 30% over a meaningful sample (20+ consultations) may suggest a qualification issue — you're having consultations with people who aren't a fit for whole life banking — or a follow-through issue where interested prospects don't complete the connection process.
If your Consultation → Client rate is high but your Click → Consultation rate is low, your profile page may not be clearly communicating what you do or who you work with. If your Click → Consultation rate is high but Consultation → Client rate is low, the issue is more likely in the consultation process itself.
Filtering by Referral Code
If you have multiple referral links (for different campaigns, contexts, or audiences), use the referral code filter to compare performance across them. Each code's funnel is tracked separately.
This is useful for understanding which referral contexts perform best — for example, whether links shared in a specific community or after a workshop convert better than general-purpose links.
Period Comparison
Use the period comparison toggle (available in the date range picker) to compare two periods side by side:
- Previous period vs. current period (e.g., last 30 days vs. the 30 days before that)
- Year-over-year (same period last year vs. this year)
Period comparisons are most useful when looking at consultation rates and client conversions — click volume can vary significantly based on whether you ran an active campaign in a given period, making raw click counts less meaningful without context.
Geographic Breakdown
The geographic breakdown shows where your link clicks and consultation requests are originating by state or country. This is available when you have at least 20 referral events in the selected period.
Geographic data is based on IP geolocation and is approximate — it's useful for understanding regional reach, not for precise address-level tracking.
What to look for:
- If you're seeing significant traffic from states where you're not licensed to do business, consider adding a geographic qualifier to your profile page or the context in which you share your link
- If traffic is highly concentrated in one region, your marketing reach may be more limited than you realize
Referral Credit Calculation
Referral credits are calculated based on clients who converted through your referral links. The analytics view shows both the client count and the associated credit amount for each period. For credit payout details, see Referral Credits.
