What Happens When a Seat Expires
If your Builder Pro access comes from an advisor-assigned seat, your access is tied to your advisor's account. This article explains what happens if that seat is removed or expires.
Why Seats Can Expire
An advisor-assigned seat can end for several reasons:
- Your advisor cancels their Policy Stack Advisor subscription
- Your advisor removes you from their client list
- Your advisor's payment method fails and their account lapses
- Your advisor's subscription tier changes and no longer includes your seat
In any of these cases, your seat expires.
The 7-Day Transition
When an advisor ends or loses your seat, you keep Builder Pro access during a 7-day transition window.
During the transition:
- Your account continues to operate as full Builder Pro
- The Builder Pro features already available to your account remain accessible
- You receive a notification in the app and by email explaining that your seat has expired
- The notification includes the self-pay path and a 20% annual Builder Pro transition coupon
The transition email goes to the address associated with your Policy Stack account. You can also see the access notice in Settings → Billing.
After Day 7: Continuing on Starter
If the 7-day window passes without self-pay or another active seat, your account continues on Starter.
When this happens:
- Your data is not deleted. All policies, loans, deployments, goals, and snapshots are preserved.
- You can view all existing records.
- One policy remains editable with its policy loans. Additional policies and all asset and goal records remain stored but locked until you subscribe or regain a seat.
- AI Insights are no longer generated, but existing insights remain visible.
- Document extraction and export features become inaccessible.
- The AI Assistant returns to Help Mode — conceptual questions only, no data access.
How to Continue on Builder Pro
If your seat expires and you want to continue on Builder Pro, you have two paths:
Self-pay:
- Go to Settings → Billing during the transition.
- Choose the available Builder Pro billing option. The transition coupon is pre-applied to eligible annual checkout.
- Complete Stripe checkout.
- Your access changes from the temporary seat transition to self-pay Builder Pro.
Reconnect with your advisor:
- Contact your advisor outside of Policy Stack to resolve the account status.
- Once your advisor reinstates their subscription and re-assigns your seat, your access updates automatically.
- No action needed on your end once the seat is reassigned.
Starting self-pay during the transition preserves Builder Pro access. A future advisor seat can replace self-pay access through the normal seat-assignment flow.
Notifications You Will Receive
Policy Stack sends the seat-loss email when the transition starts. If the window expires without another Builder Pro source, it sends a second email confirming that Starter is active. The in-app billing notice shows the remaining transition days.
