Editing and Correcting Your Data
Mistakes happen — a transposed number, an outdated figure, or a snapshot entered for the wrong date. Policy Stack makes it straightforward to correct your data while maintaining an accurate history.
Editing a Snapshot
If you entered incorrect values for a snapshot (wrong cash value, death benefit, or loan balance):
- Navigate to the policy that contains the snapshot
- Open Analytics and find the snapshot in the history list
- Click the edit button
- Update the incorrect values with the correct ones from your carrier statement
- Save the changes
The snapshot retains its original date. All dashboard calculations and trend charts will recalculate using the corrected values.
Always have your carrier statement or portal open when editing a snapshot. This ensures you are correcting to the actual reported figures.
Editing Policy Details
Policy-level details — carrier name, policy number, premium amount, start date — can be edited from the Policy Workspace:
- Navigate to the policy
- Click the edit button on the policy header
- Update the fields that need correction
- Save
Editing vs. Deleting
Prefer editing over deleting. Editing preserves the record in your timeline while correcting the values. Deleting removes the entry entirely, which can create gaps in your tracking history.
When to delete:
- A completely duplicate entry (same date, same policy, entered twice)
- A test entry you created while learning the app
When to edit:
- Wrong dollar amounts
- Wrong date
- Missing information that you now have
Correcting Banking Ledger Entries
You can edit or delete ledger entries directly if something was recorded incorrectly:
- Edit an entry — open the actions menu on the entry row and select Edit Entry to update the amount or description
- Delete an entry — select Delete Entry to remove it entirely (requires confirmation)
If you just need to fix a dollar amount or description, editing the entry is the quickest approach. Delete entries only if they should not exist at all — for example, a duplicate entry or an event that was recorded against the wrong policy.
Correcting a Loan Balance
If your recorded loan balance does not match your carrier statement:
- Record a new snapshot with the correct loan balance from your carrier
- The new snapshot becomes the current source of truth
- Previous snapshots remain in history, showing what was recorded at the time
You do not need to go back and edit old snapshots. Each snapshot represents what was known at the time it was recorded. A new snapshot with correct data is the cleanest approach.
When to Re-Enter Data
If you discover that multiple snapshots contain errors (for example, you were reading the wrong column on your carrier statement), it may be simpler to:
- Delete the incorrect snapshots
- Re-enter them with the correct values from your carrier statements
- Verify the dashboard totals match your expectations
This is appropriate for significant data quality issues, not for minor corrections.
Policy Stack always uses your most recent snapshot as the current state for a policy. If your latest snapshot has the correct figures, your dashboard will display accurate totals even if older snapshots contain errors.
