Changing Your Practice Tier
You can move up or down between any of the four advisor plans at any time from /practice/settings/billing. The Change Plan section shows every higher tier as an upgrade option and every lower tier as a downgrade option, so a Practice Solo advisor can jump straight to Practice 50 — or a Practice 50 advisor can drop straight to Solo — in one click. Each plan card opens a preview modal that explains exactly what will happen before you confirm.
Upgrading: Immediate, Prorated
Upgrades take effect the moment you confirm:
- Your seat cap increases right away — you can invite clients immediately.
- Tier-specific perks (overflow seat purchasing on Practice 10+, branded exports on Practice 10+, featured directory on Practice 25+) become available the same moment.
- Stripe calculates the prorated charge for the rest of the current billing cycle and shows the exact amount in the preview modal before you confirm.
Worked example
You're on Practice 10 ($149/mo) on day 15 of a 30-day cycle and you upgrade to Practice 25 ($299/mo):
| Line | Amount | |---|---| | Credit for the unused half of Practice 10 | −$74.50 | | Charge for the unused half of Practice 25 | +$149.50 | | Today's charge | ~$75 | | Then | $299/mo starting next cycle |
The exact numbers come from Stripe in real time and are shown in the modal before confirm — these are illustrative.
Downgrading: Scheduled for Renewal
Downgrades are scheduled for the end of your current billing cycle — no mid-cycle proration, no partial refund. You keep your current tier and every seat you've assigned through the period you've already paid for. At renewal, the new plan and its seat cap take over.
What happens to your clients at renewal
If your current assigned-seat count is higher than the new tier's capacity (included seats + any overflow you carry), your newest assigned clients (ordered by when each seat was assigned) lose their seat at renewal. The modal preview shows the exact number under "Clients affected" before you confirm — you'll know how many clients will be booted before you schedule the change.
Each booted client receives an email titled "An update about your Policy Stack access" explaining that their advisor recently updated their Policy Stack plan, reassuring them their data is safe and the account stays, and offering a 20% off coupon (ADVISOR_TRANSITION) for self-pay annual Builder Pro. See Seat Expiration and What the Client Sees for the full client-side experience.
Worked example
You're on Practice 25 with 12 assigned clients and downgrade to Practice 10 (10 included). If you have 0 overflow seats, your 2 newest clients are booted at renewal. If you carry 5 overflow seats, the new capacity is 15 — no boot.
Pending seat invitations at downgrade time
Outstanding seat invitations stay in the pool but may not convert if the seat pool fills up after renewal. Cancel any pending invitations you don't expect to accept before the renewal date so you don't end up with silently failing accepts.
Downgrading to Practice Solo
Practice Solo includes 0 client seats and no overflow purchasing. If your current assigned-seat count is greater than 0, downgrading to Solo will boot every seated client at renewal. The modal preview makes this explicit before you confirm.
How to Change Your Plan
- Navigate to /practice/settings/billing.
- Find the Change Plan section. Higher tiers appear as upgrade options; lower tiers appear as downgrade options.
- Click the plan you want. The preview modal opens and fetches the prorated charge (for upgrades) or the effective renewal date (for downgrades) from Stripe.
- Review the modal — for upgrades, you'll see today's charge plus the new monthly amount; for downgrades, you'll see the effective date and the number of clients affected (if any).
- Confirm — upgrades flip your tier immediately; downgrades are scheduled for the end of the current cycle.
Raw payment-method or card edits still live in the Stripe Customer Portal. Open it from the Manage payment method link on the billing page.
