Definition
Net position is your total cash value across all policies minus your total outstanding policy loan balances. It represents the equity in your banking system — the amount of capital that is fully unencumbered and available.
Net position gives you a single-number view of your banking system's equity. If you have $500,000 in total cash value and $200,000 in outstanding policy loans, your net position is $300,000. This is the amount of capital that is free and clear — not serving as collateral for any loan.
Why It Matters
Net position is one of the most important metrics in whole life banking because it shows your available borrowing capacity. A growing net position means your cash value is increasing faster than your loan balances — the system is building equity. Net position also provides context for your loan-to-value ratio: a $200,000 loan balance looks different against $500,000 in cash value (40% LTV) versus $250,000 in cash value (80% LTV).
Deep Explanation
Net Position
Net position is calculated across your entire portfolio — all policies, all loans. A practitioner with three policies might have cash values of $200,000, $150,000, and $100,000 ($450,000 total) with loans of $80,000 and $50,000 ($130,000 total), giving a net position of $320,000.
The trajectory of net position over time tells a story about the banking system's health. In the early capitalization years, net position grows primarily through premium payments and cash value accumulation. As practitioners begin deploying capital, net position may temporarily decrease as loans increase. Through disciplined capital restoration, net position recovers and continues growing.
Net position is distinct from net death benefit (total death benefit minus loans), which is an estate planning metric. Net position focuses on the living benefit — how much equity exists in the banking system right now. Both are important, but net position is the day-to-day operational metric practitioners monitor.
How Policy Stack Helps
Policy Stack calculates net position automatically across your entire portfolio of policies and loans. The dashboard displays your current net position as a primary metric, tracks it over time, and shows how individual policy and loan activity affects the system-wide number. It also calculates available borrowing capacity based on your net position and carrier LTV limits.
